Cleaner communities
After the very successful clean up of Everest Base Camp in 1990, our team cleaned up the village of Namche and built their first public toilets. We also assisted with the establishment of Namche Youth Group, which became the Sagarmartha Pollution Control Committee (SPCC) who manage waste in the Khumbu and the ice fall route on Everest today.
Earthquake 2015
The Mani Lhang, the community building in Khunde, was all but destroyed in the 2015 earthquake. We raised $40,000 and took a team of builders and roofers to assist the rebuild, as well as taking tradesman and raising money to build a new home in Bridim, Langtang.
Porter wellbeing
Porter welfare was always a concern for us. We were among the first to provide footwear, sunglasses and clothing, and ensure comfortable and warm bedding, as well as offering medical and dental care for porters and their families. Our porters continue to be an invaluable part of our team.
Prioritising welfare
For over 35 years we have supported hundreds of individuals and families. The first was Kami Nuru Sherpa from Sano Gumela, who had suffered polio and had no use of one leg. We supported Kami and his family over the years, and eventually an operation enabled him to walk. He has worked as a guide for us and trekked to Everest Base Camp.
A generous donation from the Whakapapa and Turoa Ski Fields has enabled us to provide many families with top quality clothing.
Focus on reforestation
With waste well managed by the SPCC, over the years. our community work focus has shifted to reforestation. With nurseries in Muse, Ghat and Khunde, our volunteers spent two days propagating seedlings which were grown on and planted after 2 years. Overall, over 20,000 trees were planted.
